Walker Passes

Jerry Walker, the youngest pitcher to start an All-Star game, died Sunday of a heart attack at his home. He lived to be 85 years old:

Walker pitched eight seasons in the major leagues for Baltimore, Kansas City and Cleveland. He made his debut as an 18-year-old in 1957 and two years later earned his lone All-Star selection. He started the second of baseball’s two All-Star Games in 1959.

Walker’s age of 20 years, 172 days broke the record set by Tigers outfielder Al Kaline (20 years, 205 days) in 1955. Kaline remains the second-youngest player to start an All-Star Game, according to Sportradar.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Walker pitched great in his rookie season of 1959, going 11-10 with a 2.92 ERA for the 74-80-1 Orioles. It was a good season for 20 year old starters on that team, as Milt Papas went 15-9 with a 3.27 ERA. It would Papas’ second best season in terms of rWAR at 4.2, and Walker’s only great season at 3.8 rWAR. He kept walks and home runs down that year, but seemed to lose both aspects of the game after that.
