Games of the Day

The Diamondbacks go for a rare win with Caleb Smith taking on Milwaukee and Corbin Burnes. Most of Smith’s best work this season came out of the bullpen, however, where he owns a 2.70 ERA in 30 innings. He allowed two home runs as a reliever, and two home runs as a starter, but in just eight innings. Burnes walks ticked up recently as he allowed five of his seven in his last two starts.

The Reds go for a sweep of the Cardinals in St. Louis as Wade Miley faces John Gant. Miley allows the ball to be put in play relative to most regular starters in the league, 73.8 percent of batters faced contacting the ball fair. Despite that, he allowed just 42 hits in 49 2/3 innings. Gant walks a ton of batters, which is a general problem for the Cardinals staff this season, as their 265 walks allowed leads the NL.

Finally, the Red Sox go for a sweep at Yankee Stadium as Garrett Richards battles Domingo German. Richards walks are up this season, with 30 in 60 innings, but his ERA remains below four. He holds batters to a .212 BA with runners on base. German is susceptible to the home run, allowing eleven dingers in 55 innings, but only walked 10 batters to limit the damage.

Games of the Day

The Cardinals and White Sox play a getaway game Wednesday afternoon with John Gant taking on Carlos Rodon. Gant puts tons of runners on base, but is a bit unhittable. He allows a .234 BA and a .364 OBP. At some point, that latter number should come back to raise his 2.04 ERA. Rodon’s ERA, 1.27, is about 60% of Gant’s, as Rodon both limits hits and walks.

Trevor Bauer leads the Dodgers against Houston and Luis Garcia. Bauer has not been helped by the less lively ball, as he allowed eight home runs in 63 2/3 innings this season, nine HR in 73 innings last year. He gives up so few other hits, however, that his ERA is once again below 2.00. Garcia allowed just 29 hits in 40 innings, but eight of those went for home runs.

Games of the Day

The White Sox send Lance Lynn against the Twins and Michael Pineda. Lynn put together a pretty good career, 108-72 with a 3.52 ERA. It seemed teams gave up on him in 2018, but that turned out to be a blip, as he’s 26-15 since then. Pineda does a good job of keeping men off base, with a .255 OBP allowed. Because of that, all eight of the home runs he allowed were solo shots.

The Pirates face the Cardinals with JT Brubaker battling John Gant. Brubaker cut down his walks and hits allowed from 2019, lowering his ERA over two runs to 2.58. Gant’s 1.83 ERA looks impossible due to him allowing 29 hits and 27 walks in 34 1/3 innings. Opponents are just five for 36 with nine walks against him with runners in scoring position, however. He seems to be pitching around the batters posing a danger. We’ll see long he can keep his ERA low with those numbers.

Games of the Day

Matt Harvey leads the Orioles against the Mets and Taijuan Walker in a noon tilt. This is Harvey’s first time facing his old team. He is pitching decently, more to contact this season with 25 K in 35 innings. Harvey’s big improvement came in the area of home runs, where he allowed just three this season. Walker owns a 2.38 ERA and allowed just one home run in 34 innings. That gives him the third best HR/9 IP in the majors.

Zack Wheeler takes on Jon Lester as the Phillies continue their series in Washington. Wheeler K’d 49 batters in 47 2/3 innings, helping him allow just 34 hits. Lester, in ten innings, held opponents to a .324 slugging percentage.

Finally, the Cardinals send John Gant against the Brewers and Brandon Woodruff. Gants stands 2-3 despite a 2.15 ERA. The Cardinals scored two runs or less in four of his six starts. Woodruff received three decisions in seven starts despite a 1.73 ERA, as he stands 2-1. It’s tough to say why that’s true. His starts have not been particularly low scoring on the part of the Brewers, and relievers in his starts have a 2.59 ERA. They did blow two saves, however. This just seems to be bad luck.

Games of the Day

The Cardinals and Pirates start the evening off with John Gant taking on JT Brubaker. Both own low ERA, but get their differently. Gant allows a ton of base runners, giving up 18 hits and 13 walks in 20 innings. He allowed just one home run, however. Brubaker allowed three home runs but with few walks they were all solo shots.

The other big NL Central game pits Jake Arrieta and the Cubs against Wade Miley and the Reds. Arrieta brought his K rate up again, with 26 strikeouts in 28 innings. Miley owns low strikeout and walk rates, so batters are putting the ball in play frequently. With a BABIP of just .190, however, Miley is getting good results on the contact.

Finally, Brady Singer leads the first place Royals into Minnesota, where Michael Pineda and the Twins find themselves seven games out of first place. The Royals own the best record in the AL. Singer pitched well, but is just 1-2 due to poor support. Kansas City scored a total of 10 runs in his four starts. Pineda comes into the game with a 2.42 ERA. He only allowed 16 hits in 22 1/3 innings, but seven of those went for extra bases.

Games of the Day

A potential ALCS match-up between Cy Young Award candidates takes place in Cleveland as Chris Sale leads the Red Sox against Trevor Bauer and the Indians. Injuries have hurt the chances of the two strikeout artists to win the award. If it should go to a pitcher with just over the minimum innings required, Blake Snell would be my choice.

The Giants try play spoilers as they visit the Cardinals. Madison Bumgarner opens the weekend series against John Gant. Bumgarner owns a 5.82 ERA in September thanks to allowing four home runs in seventeen innings. Gant appears to limit hits by pitching around batters, as he’s walked 51 in 107 innings while giving up just 83 hits.

The Rockies visit the Diamondbacks with German Marquez taking on Zack Greinke, both teams needing a win to keep hopes of a playoff slot alive. Marquez owns a 2.94 ERA on the road. Despite good strikeout number home and away, he allowed a .197 BA on the road, a .290 BA at home. Greike owns a 2.43 ERA at home this season, where he allowed just nine of his 28 home runs.

Games of the Day

The Dodgers and Cardinals continue their push for a wild card slot as Rich Hill takes on John Gant in the battle of the one syllable names. Despite walking one and striking out 15 in eleven September innings, Hill owns a 6.55 ERA, having allowed eight runs and three homers, five of the runs coming on those three homers. Gant is an odd pitcher. He walks a high number of batters, doesn’t strike out that many, but allows a low BABIP. He doesn’t induce a ton of ground balls. It looks like he has a very good four-seam fastball that gets popped up.

The Tigers play the Indians Saturday afternoon, and the Indians can clinch the AL Central with a win or a Twins loss. Michael Fulmer takes on Mike Clevinger. Fulmer’s ERA is up about three quarters of a run this season. He allowed a higher home run rate, and a .330 BA allowed with men in scoring position. Clevinger repeated his successful sophomore season, cutting down on walks while increasing his workload.

Finally, the Rockies send German Marquez against the Giants and Madison Bumgarner. Marquez improves on his sophomore season, lowering his ERA 0.45 runs with more strike outs and fewer home runs in more innings. Bumgarner doubled his walks this year in about the same number of innings as 2017, but his ERA is about the same thanks to allowing less power.

Games of the Day

Toronto sends rookie Ryan Borucki against former teammate J.A. Happ and the Yankees. Borucki, a true rookie, makes his tenth start. He doesn’t strike out many batters, but makes up for it by keeping his walk home run rates low. The latter will be test in Yankee Stadium. Happ is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA since joining New York, giving an injured rotation a boost. He allowed just eight hits in 19 innings.

The Brewers try to retake the second wild card slot as they send Jhoulys Chacín against the Cardinals and John Gant. Chacin pitched poorly against the Cardinals this season, 0-2 with an 8.59 ERA in three starts. He allowed 21 hits and 10 walks in 14 2/3 innings. Gant gives up many fewer hits at home this year, although his three-true outcomes on the road are slightly better.

Oakland goes for the sweep of the Astros and sole possession of first place in the AL West. Justin Verlander tries to stop Sean Manaea. Verlander pitches better on the road this season, 9-2 with a 1.74 ERA. Manaea is 6-0 in day games, with a 2.81 ERA covering ten starts.

Through June, the Houston gave the Oakland starters a lot of trouble. That turned around in the second half.

Finally, the Dodgers and Mariners finish their series with Clayton Kershaw facing Roenis Elias. Kershaw returned to form since the All-Star break, with two home runs and two walks allowed in 33 2/3 innings. Elias makes his second start of the season to go along with 12 relief appearances. He has not allowed a home run in 25 innings this season.

Games of the Day

The Cardinals send John Gant against the Pirates as Chris Archer makes his debut for Pittsburgh. Gant doesn’t exactly pitch to contact, with 29 walks and 50 strikeous in 59 1/3 innings. The contact against him doesn’t seem to be very good, as opponents are hitting just .200/.294/.327 against him. Archer gets in trouble early innings. With none on and none out this season, opponents are hitting .320/.346/.500 against him.

Luis Serverino takes on Rick Porcello in game two of the four-game weekend series between the Yankees and the Red Sox. Severino is slumping, with an 8.84 ERA in his last four starts. He has not made it past 15 outs in any of those games, allowing seven home runs in 19 1/3 innings. Porcello went 4-1 in July despite a 5.74 ERA. Both own good walks and strikeout numbers, but are giving up a ton of hits.

Finally, Justin Verlander leads the Astros against the Dodgers and Alex Wood in a battle of western division leaders. Verlander needs 10 strikeouts to reach 200 for the eighth season in his career. Wood owns a 7.47 ERA in three starts against AL teams.

Games of the Day

The Rays try to take three of four from the visiting Astros as Houston sends Charlie Morton against Blake Snell. Morton is 10-1 in his 16 starts, and Houston is 11-5 overall in those games. He is coming off a June in which he kept the ball in the park, but walked a high number of batters. Snell also goes for his 11th win. He is 5-1 at home with a 0.81 ERA, thanks to allowing just 28 hits in 44 1/3 innings.

Veterans Gio Gonzalez and Jake Arrieta take the mound as the Nationals play the Phillies. Gonzalez fell apart in June, posting an 8.44 ERA in five starts. He allowed six home runs and 11 walks in 21 1/3 innings. Arrieta had an evil month as well, 0-4 with 6.66 ERA. He allowed seven home runs in 25 2/3 innings.

The first place Braves go for a sweep of St. Louis with Mike Foltynewicz taking on John Gant. Foltynewicz may be the unluckiest pitcher in the majors this year. He is just 5-4 despite a 2.14 ERA. The assigned wins tracker says he should be 7-3. Gant split time between the bullpen and the rotation, allowing just one home run in 33 2/3 innings.

Mike Clevinger matches up against Frankie Montas as the Indians play the Athletics. Clevinger comes off a pretty good June in which he posted a 2.78 ERA. He struck out 33 and walked just 11 batters in 32 1/3 innings. Montas is pitching much better as a starter than he did as a reliever in 2017. In about the same number of innings, he cut his home runs allowed from ten to two.

Finally, the Red Sox and Yankees play the rubber game of their series with David Price battling Luis Severino. Price has not shone against the Yankees since putting on a Red Sox uniform. He is 2-5 with a 7.42 ERA, allowing 65 hits in 43 2/3 innings. Severino has not exactly dominated the Red Sox either. He is 2-5 with a 4.61 ERA, despite 62 K and 13 BB in 52 2/3 innings.

Games of the Day

The Nationals and Mets finish their series with Max Scherzer facing Jacob deGrom. Scherzer currently holds the lead in the NL race for the top spot in Tom Tango Cy Young Tracker points. Notice that the Nationals hold three of the top four spots, which should make them a highly rated team going into the playoffs. The Mets send their ace to the mound as well, deGrom needing five innings to reach 200 IP for the first time in his career. He owns 23% of the Mets wins.

John Gant makes his first start for the Cardinals as they try to bounce back against the Pirates and James Taillon. Gant made seven starts for the Braves in 2016, along with 13 relief appearances. He made five appearances for the Cardinals this year. His strikeouts are good, but he walked 26 batters and allowed ten home runs in 59 1/3 career innings. Taillon allowed 10 home runs in 121 2/3 innings this year, great in a season of high power.

The Cubs and Brewers finish their season series, the Brewers trying to keep hope alive with a series split. Jose Quintana meets Chase Anderson. Quintana proved a good pickup for the Cubs, going 6-3 with a 3.95 ERA with the northsiders. Anderson cut his home run rate way down, lowering his ERA from 4.39 last season to 2.74 this year.

Finally, the Diamondbacks can clinch the first wild card slot in the NL with a win and a Rockies loss. They host the Marlins with Dan Straily taking on Patrick Corbin. Straily is near the top of the list in most home runs allowed since the start of the 2016 season with 59. Corbin lost 13 games for the second year in a row, but won 14 this year instead of five. He improved all of this three-true outcome rates to lower his ERA by a run.

Games of the Day

The Tigers stand six games behind the Indians with seven head-to-head games between the two clubs. Detroit visits Cleveland for the a three-game set with Michael Fulmer facing Corey Kluber. With the game tonight, Fulmer will have made two thirds of his starts on the road, where he owns an 8-4 record and a 2.68 ERA. He hasn’t won much lately, as the Tigers scored three runs or less in five of his last seven starts. Kluber turned his record around from last season, going 9-16 in 2015, 16-9 in 2016. He owns the best ERA in the American League since the All-Star break.

Max Scherzer tries to solidify his Cy Young credentials as the Nationals take on the Braves and John Gant. Scherzer’s second-half surge is due to him bringing home runs under control. He allowed 21 HR in his first 127 2/3 innings, just five HR in his last 76 IP (since the All-Star break). That lowered his ERA about 0.6 runs. Rookie Gant owns great strikeout and good walk numbers, but allowed six home runs in his first 43 innings.

Finally, the Cardinals try to even their series with the Giants as Luke Weaver battles Matt Moore. This is a big start for the rookie Weaver, as the Cardinals are one game behind the Mets for the second wild card, and two games behind the Giants for the first slot. Like Gant, Weaver shows great control, but is a little too generous giving up home runs, five in 31 innings. Moore allowed two runs or less in five of his eight starts since joining the Giants.
