May Passes

Former pitcher Rudy May died last Saturday:

May pitched 16 seasons in the big leagues, spending time with four different teams. He had two separate stints with the Yankees and spent seven seasons with the California Angels, two seasons with the Montreal Expos and two with the Baltimore Orioles.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

May’s best season came late in his career. In 1980, at seasonal age 35, he led the American League in ERA with a 2.94 mark in 175 1/3 innings. That was good for an rWAR of 4.9, a quarter of his career WAR. He struck out 6.8 batters per nine that season, walking just two batters per nine IP.

His strength during his career, however, was keeping the ball in the park, allowing just 199 home runs in 2622 innings, 0.7 per 9 IP.
