The Diamondbacks start a series in Pittsburgh between two NL Wild Card contenders. Brandon Pfaadt takes on Luis L. Ortiz. Pfaadt followed up his rookie season by lowering his ERA nearly two runs to 3.92, cutting his home run rate nearly in half. Ortiz pitched mostly out of the bullpen this season but in five starts stands 2-0 with a 1.52 ERA in 29 2/3 innings, allowing just one home run.

The Royals face a tough pitcher in Detroit as Cole Ragans battle Tarik Skubal. Skubal leads the AL in ERA and ranks in the top five in all three-true outcomes. Ragans ranks second in both HR per 9 IP (low) and K per 9 IP (high).

The Phillies at the Mariners offers the best pitching matchup of the day as Tyler Phillips faces Bryan Woo. The rookie Phillips slid right into one of the best rotations in baseball, going 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his first four appearances, including a 1.71 ERA in his three starts. He walked two and struck out 19 in 25 innings. Woo brought his home run rate down from 3.18 in his rookie season of 2023 to 1.01 in 2024.
