Jerry Remy’s Cancer

Jerry Remy is out due to complications of lung cancer surgery performed over the winter.

A former smoker who underwent surgery for lung cancer late last year, Remy had expected to return to the booth this season, but an infection and a subsequent case of pneumonia forced him to miss most of spring training.

“I hope that disclosing my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children,” Remy said.

Once again, I’d like to wish Jerry a speedy recovery. My mom suffered from a genetic condition that ate away at her lungs much like smoking. We watched her go through bouts of asthma and pneumonia for a number of years, and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

Update: Jerry posted a statement today:

While physically I have no issues, the past few months have been emotionally draining, and exhausting for both my family and I. Along those lines, I would like to thank NESN and the Red Sox for allowing me to take as much time as I need. I am not certain exactly when I will return, but I will keep you posted. I want to make sure that when I do return I can be with the team all the way to the 2009 World Series!

I hope that by stating all this publicly it will emphasize the dangers of smoking to everyone, especially children. So, once again, I appreciate all your support and I would like to emphasize – if you don’t smoke, don’t start, and if you do smoke, try to quit! I don’t say that lightly because I know how difficult it can be.

So sad that he has to leave his work.. But since it is for his own good, we really support his decision.. It would be better if he would do that so that he will fully recover.. Sooner or later, he will be back to entertaining people.. We sincerely hope for his fast recovery..

Sure miss you!! Watching the games on tv just not the same without you!! /called my brother in CT to find out why you weren’t on the NESN and he told me you had cancer. So very sorry to hear that. Praying they are able to cure it.

I was being treated for throat infections by my doctor. 6 plus months later was diagnosed with stage 3 tonsil cancer and it was found in one lymph node. Went through surgery radiation and chemo and for now cancer free. I continued to smoke (from stress??) then one night was taken to the hospital (couldn’t breath). They sent me home on oxygen said I would be on it the rest of my life. Quit smoking the day I was dismissed from hospital cold turkey. That was about 6 weeks ago. Praying for you and your family to get throght it together and that you will be cancer free!!
I lived in CT the first 40 years my grandfather would bring the family to see the Red Sox games. I remember one year the car broke down. Mom and Dad stopped bought a used car and off to Boston we went. I am a true Red Sox fan NEVER root for the Yankees (I am married to one of their fans though) lol Don’t like my Yankee fan husband to root for my Red Sox but he does LOL We go to TX to see the sox play but haven’t made it down this year due to my health. We took our grandson to TX to see his first red sox game on my 50th birthday.
Praying for you to get well and come back to announce for us!!!

Jerry, both my wife and i miss you doing the games,Dennis is o.k. as a sub,but you and Don or “the other guy” have a great chemistry that can’t be found elsewhere in the league,at least not in the booth. My wife was not even a baseball fan until you started doing the games and she realized how funny the two of you were, now she’ll sit and watch the game and even knows most of the players by name.We both wish you the best and know that we will be praying for a speedy and full recovery for you…God bless..Brian and Cheryl

Jerry: We really miss you in the booth. Dennis and Don are doing fine, but the spark is missing: you. Tonight we lost again to the Mets. We should have won. What a shock it was to the fans. We are so sad to hear about your fight with cancer. We are praying for a full recovery and that you’ll be back in the booth soon. Remember, God is with you and knows your troubles. You are not alone. Your fans will always be with you besides your family and friends. We all feel like we know you. God Bless.
