Yesterday I noted that Joe Mauer could reach .400 with 25 straight hits. He got the first three tonight, going 3 for 3 with a walk, the walk coming in the six run eighth inning that gave the Twins a 6-3 comeback victory over the Twins. With 22 straight hits, Mauer’s average would be .39958 (191/478), which rounds to .400. Joe currently projects to 523 at bats, so he would need to go 40 for 67, a .597 BA to hit .400. He lowered the odds of hitting .400 to 1 in 458,000.
Mauer’s last run at .400 came from Aug. 2nd to Aug. 18th, a span of 15 games. He went 33/63 then, a .524 BA.
The Twins are going to need Mauer to stay hot if they are going to catch the Tigers, as they lost their first baseman. Justin Morneau has a stress fracture in his back and will miss the rest of the season.
Update: Joe Crede’s back takes him out of action for the rest of the season as well.
